Does Online Hypnotherapy Work?

Online hypnotherapy, although it has been practiced by many hypnotherapists successfully for years, still comes with a few myths and misconceptions attached which I want to clear up in this article.

Needless to say, I have become a big fan and promoter of doing therapy online. I have seen some fantastic results with clients working online and believe it is at least as good as working face to face.

But Let's Start with the Misconceptions:



1. Hypnotherapy Online is Less Effective Than Face to Face Work

Some people believe that working online is less therapeutic than working in an office face to face. They believe that you cannot build good relationships with clients online. My experience tells me that is not true.

Of course, working face to face may be someone's preference. However, from my experience as a therapist, there is no difference in terms of the therapeutic relationship or depth of connection you form with clients online.


2. Online Hypnotherapy is a Compromise

I have heard this statement and want to mention it here. Personally, I don't feel that way at all. I think hypnotherapy done online is as good, if not more effective in some ways as face to face hypnotherapy.


3. Working Face to Face is Superior and the Best Way to do Therapy

Well I have heard that opinion and I don't agree.

If Covid 19 has taught us anything, I think as therapists I think we have started to understand that we must use alternative ways and means to serve our clients. During the Covid pandemic, face to face work was simply not safe. Here, working online was the superior method.

The way I look at it, the best method is whichever method works best for the client. Many lead busy lives and travelling to and from appointments is not an option. Also, accessibility is better online for those who live outside urban hotspots.

4. Online Hypnotherapy Mostly has Disadvantages Compared to Face to Face

My experience tells me that online hypnotherapy has many advantages for clients, as well as for the practitioner.

For example, there is a cost saving on both sides. For the client there is a cost saving in travel expenses involved.

A further advantage for the client is being able to work from the comfort of their own home. This can make therapy much more accessible, especially for anxiety clients who, otherwise, might have big obstacles to overcome to attend.

There are some limitations, such as screen size and limited sensory input, but we make up for those in other ways, often simply by asking our clients what is going on. There are always ways and means to work around limitations.


How Does Online Hypnotherapy Work?

We will work with you online in the very same way as we work with clients who attend my face to face clinics. There is no difference in the effectiveness, and the added benefit for you of being able to do this from the comfort of your own home, saving you both time and travel expenses.

  • Our online programs are delivered via the Zoom platform, you will be sent a link invite prior to the arranged appointment time. 
  • We will ask you to sit in relation to the screen in such a way that we can see your face and upper half to be able to calibrate and facilitate the session properly.
  • We will ask you to use a good quality webcam, and a microphone if possible. Headphones are not ideal unless they are wireless. 
  • You need to make sure you won't be disturbed during sessions. Turn off messaging apps, your phone, and close other browser windows.
  • You will need to be inside as the light outside will cause back lighting and reflections. We want to be able to see you clearly so we can best facilitate the session.
  • You will be given instructions as to what to do should you become cut off due to issues with the internet connection.
  • Hypnotic trance works in the exact same way as it does when applied in face to face sessions. The reason for this is that your hypnotist will simply talk you through a set of instructions which you then apply yourself to bring yourself into hypnosis.
